Question/Problem Description

X-documnent:SAVE method triggers error "Cannot convert between codepage and codepage (14506)" if XML encoding not set to UTF-8.

X-document:SAVE() uses LONGCHAR variable as target.
Setting ENCODING attribute on X-Document handle to specific codepage.
ENCODING codepage is not compatible with -cpinternal codepage.

Steps to Reproduce

Clarifying Information

XML uses UTF-8 encoding as default, as per XML standards.

Sample code (assumes session started with -cpinternal ISO8859-1):

DEFINE VARIABLE hdoc AS HANDLE NO-UNDO.

DEFINE VARIABLE hroot AS HANDLE NO-UNDO.

DEFINE VARIABLE lcXMLdata AS LONGCHAR NO-UNDO.

CREATE X-DOCUMENT hDoc.

CREATE X-NODEREF hRoot.

/*Xml Root*/

hDoc:ENCODING = "1254". /* Turkish, no conversion from ISO8859-1 available)

hDoc:CREATE-NODE(hRoot,"Message","ELEMENT").

hDoc:APPEND-CHILD(hRoot).

FIX-CODEPAGE(lcXMLdata) = hDoc:ENCODING.

hDoc:SAVE("LONGCHAR",lcXMLData).

Cause

This is expected behavior.
X-document SAVE() method does not set codepage for the longchar variable; instead it tries to convert to the longchar's codepage. (If the longchar does not have a fixed codepage, this means the SAVE() method will try to convert to -cpinternal codepage.)

The error occurs because in the given scenario there is no conversion table between the codepages.

Resolution

Fix the longchar's codepage to match the XML encoding.

To continue example above:

DEFINE VARIABLE hdoc AS HANDLE NO-UNDO.

DEFINE VARIABLE hroot AS HANDLE NO-UNDO.
DEFINE VARIABLE lcXMLdata AS LONGCHAR NO-UNDO.

CREATE X-DOCUMENT hDoc.
CREATE X-NODEREF hRoot.

Notes

Note that when using incompatible codepages, there may be further issues if the data contains characters that do not exist in both codepages.
To avoid those issues, it's strongly recommended to use the UTF-8 encoding for the XML, as is the default in the XML standards.
