Marklogic Critical Security Alert Bulletin – October 2026

The Progress MarkLogic team has identified and remediated several critical and high security vulnerabilities in MarkLogic Server, involving privilege management, authentication and session validation, server-side request handling, sensitive-information exposure, XML processing and memory safety. Depending on the affected feature and configuration, exploitation could result in unauthorized administrative actions, unauthorized access to or modification of data, credential exposure, code execution, service disruption or reduced auditability. Fixed versions are available, and Progress strongly recommends that all customers upgrade as soon as possible.

What are the symptoms? 

Affected MarkLogic Server instances exhibit no advance warning and continue to operate normally. Depending on the vulnerability, attempted or successful exploitation could result in unexpected administrative changes, authentication anomalies, unusual outbound connections, altered or missing audit information or process instability. Not every vulnerability produces reliable log evidence, and the absence of indicators does not establish that exploitation has not occurred.

MarkLogic Server 12.0 –12.0.3: Subject to the version, platform, feature and configuration scope identified for each CVE.

MarkLogic Server 11.0 –11.3.6: Subject to the version, feature, and configuration scope identified for each CVE

MarkLogic Server 10.x and earlier: Retired MarkLogic Server releases were not included in the complete assessment and do not receive fixes. Customers using retired releases should upgrade to a supported fixed release.

What actions do you need to take?

We have addressed the vulnerabilities and the Progress MarkLogic team strongly recommends performing an upgrade to the latest version listed in the table below.

Some security changes alter legacy APIs, privilege requirements, authentication validation, logging, XML parsing and transport behavior. Review the following documents and complete the applicable preparation before upgrading:

Customers using older MarkLogic Content Pump (mlcp) clients must upgrade mlcp to the version matching MarkLogic Server 12.1 or 11.3.7. Customers using custom RPM-based Linux installations should also confirm that curl is installed so the shipped cloud metadata protection can operate as designed.

Customers using MarkLogic Server on Progress Data Cloud were patched and are no longer vulnerable to these issues.

Issues

• CVE-2026-9191 — CWE-346: Origin Validation Error

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 do not sufficiently isolate user-supplied code executed through certain REST and XDBC evaluation paths from HTTP request, response, and session state. An attacker able to execute code through an affected path could perform unauthorized actions or compromise an authenticated session.

• CVE-2026-85947 — CWE-269: Improper Privilege Management

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 contain an authorization flaw in certain forest-management operations. A remote attacker with forest-management privileges could exploit this flaw to create a persistent, unauthorized administrator account, potentially resulting in complete unauthorized administrative control of the server.

• CVE-2026-85948 — CWE-269: Improper Privilege Management

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 contain an XQuery-injection flaw in a deprecated Management API package path. A remote attacker with manage-user-level privileges could exploit this flaw to obtain persistent unauthorized administrative control.

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 may record security-sensitive information in diagnostic logs under certain configurations. An attacker with access to the affected logs could use this information to obtain unauthorized access to protected resources.

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 contain an authorization flaw that could allow a remote attacker with administrative privileges to access authentication material associated with higher-privileged users, potentially resulting in unauthorized administrative access.

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 on Azure contain a server-side request forgery vulnerability that could allow an authenticated attacker to access internal cloud services, potentially resulting in unauthorized access to cloud credentials or tokens.

Affected Linux-based Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 contain a server-side request forgery vulnerability that could allow an authenticated attacker to access internal cloud services, potentially resulting in unauthorized access to cloud credentials.

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 contain privileged legacy InfoStudio modules that do not sufficiently validate user-controlled file paths and user-context values. Exploitation could result in unauthorized access to server files or execution under an unintended identity.

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 can evaluate user-controlled values supplied to certain higher-order XQuery functions in an elevated security context, which could result in privilege escalation beyond the attacker's granted permissions.

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 allow a remote attacker with query-execution access to invoke an XQuery evaluation function without the additional required evaluation privilege, which could result in server-side code execution with elevated permissions.

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 contain an authentication validation weakness that could allow an attacker to use a token that should not be accepted by the affected server, which could result in unauthorized access.

• CVE-2026-85959 — CWE-778: Insufficient Logging

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 do not consistently record successful authentication events in audit logs, which could limit customers' ability to detect and investigate unauthorized access or credential misuse.

• CVE-2026-85960 — CWE-352: Cross-Site Request Forgery

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 use predictable CSRF tokens in Query Console. A remote attacker who lures an authenticated Query Console user to a malicious page could submit unauthorized requests and execute server-side code with the victim's permissions.

• CVE-2026-85961 — CWE-532: Insertion of Sensitive Information into Log File

On Azure deployments, Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 may record security-sensitive authentication information in diagnostic logs under certain configurations. An attacker with access to the affected logs could use this information to obtain unauthorized access to protected cloud resources.

• CVE-2026-85962 — CWE-287: Improper Authentication

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 contain improper authentication vulnerability in SAML processing. In deployments that use SAML authentication, an unauthenticated remote attacker could cause the affected server to accept an assertion that should be rejected, potentially resulting in unauthorized access.

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 include deprecated OpsDirector functionality with weaknesses that could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to make unauthorized requests to internal services or forge trusted requests, potentially resulting in unauthorized access to protected information.

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 allow an authenticated Query Console user to supply unsafe path values to a privileged filesystem helper, which could result in disclosure of arbitrary server files.

• CVE-2026-85965 — CWE-416: Use After Free

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 contain memory-safety defects in the JavaScript engine integration that could result in memory corruption, controlled process failure, or server instability.

• CVE-2026-85966 — CWE-200: Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 do not sufficiently restrict access to certain security-sensitive information. A remote authenticated attacker with limited management permissions could obtain this information, which could result in unauthorized access to protected resources.

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 contain a cross-site scripting vulnerability that could allow a remote attacker to execute script in the context of an authenticated user's browser session, which could result in unauthorized actions or disclosure of information accessible to that user.

• CVE-2026-85968 — CWE-125: Out-of-bounds Read

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 contain an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in certain query-processing functionality. A remote authenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause server instability or disclose limited information from process memory.

• CVE-2026-85969 — CWE-787: Out-of-bounds Write

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 contain an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in certain language-processing functionality. A remote authenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause server instability or limited modification of data.

• CVE-2026-85970 — CWE-611: Improper Restriction of XML External Entity Reference

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 enable XML external entity processing by default in multiple server paths, which could allow crafted XML to cause server-side requests or disclosure of local files.

• CVE-2026-85971 — CWE-732: Incorrect Permission Assignment for Critical Resource

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 assign overly permissive operating-system permissions to certain log files, which could allow a local user to read or alter log data. The corrected default permissions apply to newly created and rotated logs; existing logs retain their current permissions until remediated.

• CVE-2026-85972 — CWE-303: Incorrect Implementation of Authentication Algorithm

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 do not sufficiently verify the identity of a Kerberos authentication service in certain password-based authentication configurations. A network-positioned attacker could impersonate trusted authentication infrastructure, potentially resulting in unauthorized access or modification of protected data.

• CVE-2026-85973 — CWE-319: Cleartext Transmission of Sensitive Information

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 may use cleartext transport for certain cluster-management communications. A network-positioned attacker could intercept or modify information transmitted through an affected connection.

• CVE-2026-85974 — CWE-297: Improper Validation of Certificate with Host Mismatch

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 do not consistently validate TLS certificate hostnames for certain outbound connections. A network-positioned attacker could exploit this weakness to intercept or modify communications with an affected service.

• CVE-2026-85975 — CWE-319: Cleartext Transmission of Sensitive Information

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 may use cleartext transport for Amazon S3 connections by default. A network-positioned attacker could intercept data or credentials transmitted through an affected connection.

• CVE-2026-85976 — CWE-113: Improper Neutralization of CRLF Sequences in HTTP Headers

Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x releases before 12.1.0 and 11.x releases before 11.3.7 do not sufficiently sanitize input used by the Query Console file-exploration endpoint, which could allow HTTP response splitting and unintended client-side response handling.
