1. Install SQuirreL SQL Client

Download the installer file squirrel-sql-<version>-install.jar from http://squirrel-sql.sourceforge.net
Install the SQuirreL SQL Client under Windows or Linux: java -jar squirrel-sql-<version>-install.jar
During the graphical installation provide an installation path and select a base or standard install as required.
Shortcuts to SQuirreL can be created on the desktop and in the Start menu.
An uninstaller script is generated automatically and placed in the 'Uninstaller' folder of the SQuirreL installation directory.

If a Squirrel version older than 3.9.0 is used with java version 10 or newer then make sure to uncomment the 2 lines:
"%LOCAL_JAVA%" -cp "%SQUIRREL_SQL_HOME%\lib\versioncheck.jar" JavaVersionChecker 1.6 1.7 1.8
if ErrorLevel 1 goto ExitForWrongJavaVersion
in squirrel-sql.bat (under Windows), or the 4 lines:
$JAVACMD -cp "$UNIX_STYLE_HOME/lib/versioncheck.jar" JavaVersionChecker 1.6 1.7 1.8

in squirrel-sql.sh (under Linux)

If not already defined at the OS level then a line like:
set JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_144
will need to be added at the begin of the file squirrel-sql.bat (under Windows)
or a line like
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.8.0_144
will need to be added at the begin of the file squirrel-sql.sh (under Linux)

For OpenEdge versions prior to version 10.1A a 32 bit java version 6 and some additional environment variables needs to be set in the squirrel-sql.bat or squirrel-sql.sh before launching the SQuirreL SQL Client. The older stable version 3.8.0 of SQuirrel SQL will need to be used as SQuirrel SQL 3.8.1 and higher requires java 8 or higher.

For the Windows squirrel-sql.bat these will be lines like:

cd C:\Program Files\Squirrel SQL Client

SET JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.6.0_45
SET PATH=%DLC%\bin;%PATH%

and for the Linux squirrel-sql.sh this will be lines like:

2. Add the OpenEdge JDBC driver:

Open the SQuirreL SQL client.
Select the 'Drivers' tab and click on the '+' button
In the 'Name' field fill in 'OpenEdge' and the OpenEdge version
In the field 'Example URL':
- For OpenEdge version 9.1E fill in 'jdbc:JdbcProgress:T:localhost:5555:testdb',
- For OpenEdge versions 10.x fill in 'jdbc:datadirect:openedge://localhost:5555;databaseName=testdb'
In the field 'Website URL' fill in 'www.progress.com'.
Select the 'Extra Class Path' tab and click on the 'Add' button to add OpenEdge jar files.

For OpenEdge versions 9.1E and 10.0B add:

<oeinstalldir>/java/jdbc.jar

For OpenEdge versions 10.1A, 10.1B, 10.1C and 10.2A add:

<oeinstalldir>/java/openedge.jar
<oeinstalldir>/java/util.jar
<oeinstalldir>/java/base.jar

For OpenEdge versions 10.2B, 11.0, 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4, 11.5, 11.6, 11.7 and 12..x add:

<oeinstalldir>/java/openedge.jar

Select the 'List Drivers' button, in the Class Name field the following will appear:

For OpenEdge versions 9.1E and 10.0B:

com.progress.sql.jdbc.JdbcProgressDriver

For OpenEdge versions 10.1A, 10.1B, 10.1C, 10.2A, 10.2B, 11.0, 11.1, 11.3, 11.4, 11.5, 11.6, 11.7 and 12.x: com.ddtek.jdbc.openedge.OpenEdgeDriver

3. Connect to an OpenEdge database

Select the 'Aliases' tab and click on the '+' button,
In the 'Driver' drop down select the new driver entry previously created,
Modify the 'URL' entry to match the hostname, port number and database name of the database
Populate the database 'User Name' and 'Password' fields

4. Verify the entered alias settings and run a query

Select the 'Test' button
Select the “Connect” button in the popup
A popup with 'Connection successful' will verify the entered alias details
When the connection is successful select the 'OK' button
A new alias is added to the aliases list
Right click on the new alias created and select 'Connect'
Write a sample SQL query:

Example: select * from PUB.customer;

Select the running man button or press the keyboard buttons Ctrl and Enter simultaneously to run the SQL query.
