API call to update/add device custom links
While we can add custom links to new devices using the templates API, there isn't a way that I could find to add new custom links either via API or WhatsUpGoldPS.
Has anyone done this?
Are you wanting to only pull "newly created" custom links or wanting to see if links you created show up?
In the WhatsUpGoldPS, there is the Get-WUGDeviceTemplate which will return the device template which you will see if there is a custom link.
Have you upgraded WhatsUpGoldPS lately? It was updated with more functions in May 2026
Hi @Mike Rockwell (Progress Software) ,
I don't want to pull custom links. I want to create a specific custom link on all my devices. And yes, I use WhatsUpGoldPS. Unfortunately, it doesn't let you create a custom link...
Thanks,
Patrick
Yes, you use, in WhatsUpGoldPS, Add-WUGDeviceTemplates which if the device already exists, it updates the device from the template. In the template you would set:
DeviceTemplateCustomLink {
name (string, optional): Required: Name of the link ,
value (string, optional): Value for the link. Can be empty and can use Device % variables.
}
That's what I thought too... If you look on the github, I have a conversation going with Jason where we show that's not the case unfortunately...
Was he saying it doesn't work in the WhatsUpGoldPS, or it does not work for the API in general using Patch /api/v1/devices/-/config/template?
You could use the Role/Sub-Role to add the custom link, then wen you rescan, it will add them.

You can use the module to automate adding/updating the devices attributes using https://github.com/jayyx2/WhatsUpGoldPS/blob/main/functions/Set-WUGDeviceAttribute.ps1 -- it's just device custom links which are unavailable in the WhatsUp Gold REST API
Also, I tried the role/sub-role to add the link, and that doesn't seem to work either...
Any ideas? Could I use SQL to update all devices with the same link?
