Snowflake MFA Enforcement for Password-Based Authentication

Snowflake is enforcing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for password-based authentication flows. As a result, applications using Progress DataDirect Connect drivers to connect to Snowflake with

AuthenticationMethod=UserIDPassword may experience connection failures if MFA requirements are not satisfied.

How This Impacts Existing Customers

Customers currently using Snowflake connections configured with AuthenticationMethod=UserIDPassword and supplying only a User ID and Password may be impacted by Snowflake's MFA enforcement. Depending on the Snowflake account configuration and security policies, these connections may no longer authenticate successfully.

Recommended Actions

Progress DataDirect recommends that customers review their Snowflake connection configurations and evaluate the use of alternative authentication methods that align with Snowflake's security requirements, including:

  • AuthenticationMethod=OAuth2
  • AuthenticationMethod=KeyPair

Adopting these authentication methods can help ensure continued and seamless connectivity to Snowflake data as MFA enforcement for password-based authentication becomes more broadly applicable.

Next Steps

Customers should identify Snowflake connections that currently use AuthenticationMethod=UserIDPassword and assess whether a transition to OAuth2 or KeyPair authentication is appropriate for their environment.

Progress DataDirect plans to change the default AuthenticationMethod for Snowflake drivers to OAuth2 by the end of Q4 2026.
